The most effective precautionary measure is to wash hands before and after (before: eating and preparing food; after: going to the toilet, changing nappies). Take care of food hygiene: cook thoroughly (above 60°C), keep cold food cold (below 5°C), when travelling avoid uncooked foods, peeled fruits and vegetable, use bottled water to drink and brush your teeth. Clean regularly toilet, bathroom and kitchen (taps, door handles, electric switches, toilet seats, baby change tables); rather than cloth towels, use disposable paper towels in the kitchen. Finally, probiotics have been shown to be beneficial in some forms of gastroenteritis.
